bristol question time

Extract from the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition Website

Our Bristol Question Time, in partnership with RSPB and Oxfam, unified local voices in a clear call for immediate Government action to cut the UK’s carbon emissions.

Around 200 people packed in to Bristol’s Council House to quiz local MPs: Steve Webb; Robert key and Paul Smith, along with the CEO of RSPB, Graham Wynne, and Tim Jones of the World Development Movement. Chief Executive of the South West Regional Secretariat, Bryony Houlden chaired the panel.

There were tough questions from the audience on the headline issues of new coal and renewable energy, as well as the Severn Barrage, Bristol’s transport system and energy efficiency.

Roger James (Oxfam South West’s regional campaigner) said:

Critical concerns on energy and climate change were addressed in an open dialogue between politicians, key thinkers and a packed hall of local people. The next few months are vital for all of us to take action to ensure our Government chooses a green energy future not a fossil fuel future

This Bristol Question Time took place on Thursday 23rd October from 6.30pm through to 9pm, and took place at the Conference Hall, Bristol City Council House, College Green, Bristol. BS1 5TW.

Since this event was held the Government announced not only a target of 80% reduction of CO2 but also to include aviation and shipping.  Together this meant that the Labour Government had agreed with all of the main campaign points of the coalition.

The following is an extract from Ed Milliband's statement to the House of Commons

"I end by paying tribute not to those in the House, but to those outside it: those who saw the dangers of climate change and the actions that needed to be taken long before the politicians did. I pay tribute to the scientists who detected the problem, the campaigners who fought to bring it to public attention, the green movement that mobilised for change, and above all, the members of the public who wrote to us in record numbers, asking for a Bill that met the scale of the challenge. I believe that we have met that challenge. We owe them a debt of gratitude for making it happen, and I urge all Members to support the Third Reading."
