Make New Year safer for our
children
20 miles per
hour restrictions should be applied to all residential areas 24/7
according to Labour campaigner and Parliamentary Candidate,
Alderman Paul Smith.
“We should build upon pilot schemes in the City and around the
country to make our streets safer for our children and change the
culture of driving in this country” he said. This would also include major
roads into Bristol including Gloucester Road, Whiteladies Road,
Hotwell road and Stapleton Road which are all
residential.
Lowering the
limit would have a number of benefits:
-
Increased chance of survival and reduction in
the severity of injuries for pedestrians and drivers involved in
accidents
-
Reduced numbers of cyclists riding on
pavements as roads become safer
-
Increase walking and cycling in the
City
-
Improve neighbourhood contact as roads become
less of a barrier to community cohesion
-
Reduced pollution and CO2
emissions
Paul added,
“Now is the time to put our children and communities
first. 30 mph for
many drivers means 35mph, a speed which will lead to the majority
of children being killed in an accident, whereas a 20mph limit
would ensure almost all survive. Cycling, public transport and
pedestrian organisations in Bristol already back the ’20 is plenty
campaign’. Cars cause
more injuries and deaths in Bristol than guns or knives, now is the
time to dedicate ourselves to a safer City”.
