Climate Change: A Global Injustice
Paul Smith attended this event organised by Oxfam with representatives of SERA (Socialist Environmental and Resources Association). It was organised by Oxfam and brought together environmental and
developmental concerns.
The main speakers were George Monbiot and Kate Raworth. Paul commented, "It was excellent to see the issues of global poverty and injustice and global warming brought together. The
impact of climate change on weather patterns in Africa and Asia is already leading to crop failures, floods and increased desertification. People are dieing and we need to act. I have
always considered climate change to be a socialist issue and not a fringe environmental concern. It is the poorest people in the poorest nations who are suffering largely due to the actions
of the richest people in the richest nations. It is clear that the Labour Government is at the forefront of acting on this but that the current proposals in the Climate Change Bill are still
too modest to have the desired effects".
