Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown visits Bristol
The Prime Minister’s wife Sarah Brown visited a new Children’s Centre at St Werburgh’s Park Nursery School .
Mrs Brown, who was joined by Labour’s candidate for Bristol West, Paul Smith, was taken on a guided tour of the site by head teacher Liz Jenkins.
It was her first official visit to Bristol since Gordon Brown became Prime Minister in June 2007. She was one of the first people to see the new centre which will provide a one-stop-shop of
services for parents and children in the St Werburgh’s area.
St. Werburgh’s Park is one of the oldest Local Authority maintained nursery schools in the country and the first to open in Bristol in 1931; the school has a proud history of high quality early
year’s education. The new facilities, which will be officially opened in March, have almost doubled the size of the nursery.
As well as touring the new facilities Mrs Brown met children and joined them in their morning activities.
During the visit she also met Shirley Breeze whose son and daughter went to the nursery more than 40 years ago. Mrs Breeze is putting together a memory book, featuring photographs taken over
the years, to celebrate the new building. Mrs Brown was also be shown a video of footage taken at the nursery in 1938 and will meet staff, co-chair of Governors Claire Kendall-Muniesa and Governor
Karin Smyth.
Paul Smith said "It has been a genuine pleasure to welcome Sarah Brown to Bristol and it is great that we are able to show her around this wonderful new facility which will be a great boost to the
families and youngsters in St Werburgh's.
"She was very interested in learning about the work the centre will be doing in the local community. It is a fantastic new building and will provide one main centre where parents and children alike
can access a range of services ensuring our youngsters in this area get the best possible start in life."
